Madison Gunderson had an outstanding athletic career at William Floyd. A scholar-athlete in field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball, there was never a point in the school year where Madison was not playing a sport. She found the most success on the basketball court, where she is one of the most accomplished players in William Floyd history.

From the moment she joined the girls’ varsity basketball team, Madison made an immediate impact. She was named All-League and All-County in 2005-06, as well as led the Colonials to their first playoff appearance in 20 years during her senior season. She was also named a Newsday “Suffolk Player to Watch” as well as named to the New York State All-Academic team in 2006.

Her accomplishments on the court led her to Division II basketball, where she would play for the New York Institute of Technology women’s basketball team from 2006 through 2010. During her tenure at NYIT she set the all-time scoring record for the school that lasted 10 years. She was sixth all-time in three-point shots made, eighth all-time in steals, ninth all-time in blocked shots and made the ECC All-Academic team each season (2006-2010). She was also the fifth person in the institution’s history to receive the 1000 career points award.

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education and a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and a brief stint as a professional basketball player in Puerto Rico, Madison returned to her home roots of William Floyd to teach elementary students. She also served as a junior varsity basketball assistant coach from 2011-2015 and the girls basketball summer sports camp coach from 2011-2018. Madison is currently an assistant coach for the girls’ varsity basketball team as well as a fifth-grade teacher at Moriches Elementary School.
