Why Prairies Developed in North America

The prairie is a uniquely American biome, found nowhere else on earth outside of North America. Many millions of years ago, the land we now call Illinois was actually the bottom of a shallow tropical sea. This history is important because that sea formed the bedrock of the Midwest which is the foundation of our soils.
Join the Lake to Prairie Chapter of Wild Ones, on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 7:00pm at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein, as environmental educator, Dr. Jeff Hoyer helps us understand what ancient forces formed the land we live on, the impact humans have had on the landscape, prairie plant evolution and adaption and how we can share in the benefits they provide for our environment.
