SoHo Park Gets Famous Mural Enhanced by Hundreds of Children

A famous artist had over 200 children help her re-envision one of her works, which will be on display Oct. 1 at Vesuvio Park.

SOHO, NY — Imagine as a child if you had your work exhibited in a SoHo park. Over 200 children had this opportunity in the past few months when they stopped by the Children's Museum of the Arts and collaborated with artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders to make four large murals at SoHo's Vesuvio Playground. They will all be unveiled to the community Saturday, Oct. 1.

Children who stopped by the CMA's public hours in the past few months were able to draw with colored pencils on a piece of tile designed by Greenfield-Sanders. The artist had separated an image from her parachute series of 2008 into 72 separate square tiles, which were each drawn on by the children at the CMA. She then reassembled her vision with the children's tiles.

The project, called "Playground Parachutes," was put together by Green Below 14, SmartSpaces and the CMA, three NYC-based nonprofits that collaborated with Greenfield-Sanders and NYC Parks. The new works will be unveiled Oct. 1 at 10:30 a.m. and will be on display until Nov. 1.
