Soho Residents Warned Of Uptick In Burglaries: NYPD
A rash of burglaries has prompted police to post warnings in the neighborhood and on social media.

SOHO, NY — The 1st Precinct is warning Soho residents to lock their windows and doors because of a rise in burglaries in the high-end neighborhood, according to NYPD signage posted around the area.
“Due to recent burglaries in the Soho area the NYPD is asking that you remember to lock your windows and doors and properly secure your A/C units to the window frame," reads police issued "Alert" fliers, which were recently peppered throughout Soho.
Burglaries in Soho have more than doubled in July and August compared to the same period last, police department crimes statistics show. NYPD CompStat data collected in the latest 28-day period, ending on Aug. 19, show there have been 10 burglaries in the 1st Precinct — there only four during the same stretch of time last year.

The 1st Precinct's Twitter account has also circulated fliers with tips on how to secure windows, air conditioners and fire escapes to deter thieves.

Overall, area break-ins have risen from 43 by this time last year to 47 the year to date, police stats indicate. Police do not believe the uptick is part of a trend, a police spokesman said.

Some brazen thieves have managed to make off with thousands worth of goods, including an Aug. 17 burglary where two men stole into 54 Thompson Street near Broome Street at 1:30 a.m. and made off with suitcases stuffed with eletronics from the Soho office building.
