Trump SoHo To Lay Off Employees: Report

Trump SoHo is facing a post-election business slump, according to WNYC.

SOHO, NY — Trump SoHo is preparing to lay off a dozen employees after a post-election dip in business, WNYC reported on Wednesday.

The 46-story luxury hotel in SoHo is part of the Trump Organization's expansive network of high-end hotels. In the wake of President Donald Trump's election, the SoHo outpost has suffered. A restaurant located inside of the hotel, Koi, announced recently that it was shutting its doors because business has dropped dramatically after the hotel's namesake was elected to the highest office in the U.S. Now, sources tell WNYC that the hotel itself is seeing fewer guests and reducing its fares.

The public radio station spoke with two sources who confirmed that managers are preparing to lay off twelve room attendants out of a staff of 80, in addition to ending the hotel's traditional turn-down service.

According to WNYC:

But five months into the Trump administration, it turns out that the Trump name may be undesirable in lower Manhattan. Bookings for corporate events are down sharply, and the hotel is planning layoffs.
Today, you can find rooms for under $400 a night, several hundred dollars less than other five-star Manhattan hotels — less even than some four-star hotels. Citing a post-election slump, Koi Restaurant has left a month earlier than planned, leaving an empty locked space off the lobby.
And managers are prepared to lay off twelve room attendants (out of a housekeeping staff of 80) and eliminate turn-down service, two sources confirmed to WNYC.

The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Patch, but said in a statement to WNYC that "hotel rates and occupancy fluctuate due to factors such as seasonality and macro-economic forces."

Update, 5:10 p.m.: A spokesperson for Trump SoHo confirmed to Patch that the hotel will "revise" its turn down program which will involve a "shift" in its operating model.

"As is common in the hotel industry, and in any business, we continually assess our offerings and services," the spokesperson said in a statement. "As such, we have decided to revise our turn down program, while exploring opportunities for making the service more personal and special. This change has required a shift in our operating model."
