Elderly Golden Retriever Ditched at Kill Shelter, Saved in Southampton; Go Fund Me Aims to Help

The dog was surrendered because his owner had "no time for him," the Go Fund Me states.

After 11 years of faithful devotion, a senior golden retriever mix was ditched at a kill shelter and left to die.

According to a Go Fund Me page created to help with his continued care and medications, Lok Lok, 11, was surrendered to a kill shelter in New York City — but a savior rescued him and brought him to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation.

So far, the page has raised $25 of its $2,000 goal in one day.

“At a time in his life, when he was supposed to live out his golden years, in the only home he has ever known, he was abandoned because his owner said he did not have time for him anymore,” the page states.

According to statistics, the page says, every year, more than 8,000 adoptable animals are killed in the New York City shelter system because they are homeless.

“For a senior with age related medical needs, there was little chance for Lok Lok to be adopted or rescued, and there was little hope for him to make it out alive,” the page states.

Lok Lok means “The Lucky Life”, and the senior was, indeed, graced by good fortune when he was saved by a rescue and taken in by the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation to help with his care and placement.

“However, luck was only one factor. It was the love and compassion of those who reached out to Lok Lok in his time of need that saved his life,” the page said.

The SASF provides medical support seven days a week, a wellness clinic, a dedicated and caring staff and volunteer team, and an extensive foster and adoption network, the page said.

“When Lok Lok arrived at SASF he had to be carried out of the car and into the shelter. He was not able to walk or even stand. Today, Lok Lok is now not only walking and standing but he is also barking, playing and wagging his tail,” the page says.

Lok Lok enjoys Red Creek Park, watching the birds, snuggling with staff, and is now ready for adoption.

He is doing well on his daily medications, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and chondroitin; SASF will provide these medications for the duration of his life. The shelter will also provide free checkups at their wellness clinic.
