Hamptons Rollover Crash Leads To DWI Charge: Police

The 19-year-old, who was charged with driving while intoxicated and speeding, told officials he swerved to avoid a deer, police say.

WATER MILL, NY — A Southampton man was charged with driving while intoxicated after a rollover crash in Water Mill in the early hours of Halloween, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Logan Gates, 19, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and unreasonable speed after the crash, which took place at 1:15 a.m. on Deerfield Road.

Officers who responded to the scene found an overturned 2009 Honda carrying Gates and four passengers, police said.

Gates told officials he swerved to avoid a deer, police said. Two of his passengers were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries; the other two passengers were unharmed, police said.

Gates was subsequently found to be intoxicated and was arrested, taken to Southampton Town Police headquarters and charged, police said.

the lives of others as well as yourselves," Southampton Police said. "The roadways should be safe for all who use them."
