LI Teacher Named As Special Olympics Coach In USA Games

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A Southampton High School physical education teacher has been chosen to serve as a Special Olympics Team NY coach for the 2022 USA games.

Brian Tenety was one of 30 coaches from New York State selected for the team, the Southampton Union Free School District said in a release.

“The Special Olympics could not have found a better advocate and coach to represent New York,” said Southampton High School Principal Brian Zahn. “We are so proud of him!”

Tenety will be coaching track and field during the USA Games, which are scheduled for June 5 to 12, 2022 at the Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The games will include more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from across the United States, the district said.

Tenety joined the Southampton school district 16 years ago and has since coached varsity lacrosse, JV football, middle school wrestling and currently, the unified basketball team; he has also coached unified bowling, hockey, soccer, and track and field for Special Olympics competitions, the district said.

In addition, he was named Adapted PE Teacher of the Year by Special Olympics and, under his direction, the Southampton School District earned a National Banner School Unified Champion School recognition from Special Olympics, the district said.
