Man Caught Red-Handed Stealing Safe From Hamptons Home: Police

He dropped the safe in the driveway and ran, police say.

SAGAPONACK, NY — A Riverhead man was caught red-handed when he tried to steal a safe from a Sagaponack home Wednesday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the incident took place at 12:26 p.m. when Cesar Zavalavega, 22, entered a home on Sagaponack Main Street and removed a safe from the home before being confronted by one of the residents.

Zavalavega fled the house, dropping the safe in the driveway and driving away in a blue minivan; he was apprehended a short time later, police said.

Zavalavega was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary, a felony; he is being held at the Southampton Town Police Department for arraignment, police said.
