Pearce to Serve as Acting Town Police Chief

Southampton Town Board members accepted the resignation of Southampton Town Police Chief William Wilson last week a couple of days after the chief announced his intent to step down from his post.

With the resignation accepted, according to 27east.com, Capt. Robert Pearce will take the lead as acting chief of the department until the board chooses a full-time replacement.

According to the article, Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst noted at last week's meeting that the board is intending to consider officers at the rank of captain or above to fill the chief's spot, which Wilson held for about a year and a half.

Wilson told Patch the he decided to retire because he had been blocked at every turn from making the kind of changes and improvements to the police department that he had hoped to when he was appointed. He said that a majority of the Town Board members — either because they are financially hog tied or because of internal board disputes — have not allowed him to accomplish what he set out to do.

His retirement takes effect Dec. 1.  While he will remain on staff until then, Wilson will be using accrued vacation time until that date.
