Tony Winning Play "Red" Comes to Guild Hall

On May 21, ”Red,” John Logan's Tony-winning play about the artist Mark Rothko, will open at Guild Hall in East Hampton at 8 p.m. Directed by Stephen Hamilton and produced by Guild Hall in association with Ellen J. Myers, the two-character play the fraught working relationship between Rothko, played by Victor Slezak, and his (fictional) young studio assistant, Ken, played by Christian Scheider. The play is set during the time when Rothko was working on the commission of four murals for the new Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York City.

The original production, which came to Broadway from London's Donmar Warehouse, won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play. (Eddie Redmayne, who played the young assistant, also won a Tony for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.)

Set in 1958, the drama focuses on master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and takes place over the course of the two years it took for him to complete his commission. The two passionately debate the nature of art and why it matters. Raw and provocative, "Red" is at once a searing portrait of an artist whose ambition, vulnerability and integrity collide. Seating is limited to 75, as the audience sits on the stage.
