Woman Killed In Suffolk Crash; Driver Charged With DWI: Police

A man was charged with DWI after a passenger in his SUV died in a crash early Sunday, police say.

NORTHAMPTON, NY — A woman was killed and a man charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash in Northampton early Sunday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the single-vehicle crash took place at 2:28 a.m. in the southbound lane of County Road 51, just south of Suffolk County Community College.

A 2011 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Juan Carlo Sapon-Torres, 27, of Mastic Beach, crashed into a metal pole, police said.

Officers removed passenger Liliana Ner-Reyes, 41, of Riverhead, from the vehicle, and performed CPR until Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported her to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Sapon-Torres was charged driving while intoxicated, police said. He was airlifted by Suffolk County aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Southampton Town Police detectives responded and are continuing the investigation; New York State troopers responded to assist with accident reconstruction, police said.
