School Vote 2019: Southampton Budget, BOE Candidates

Here's what you need to know before you head out to vote on Tuesday.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Residents in the Southampton Union Free School District will vote on the district's $71,908,015 proposed budget for the 2019-20 school year on Tuesday, May 21.

The proposal calls for a 2.09 percent increase in spending over the current year and the tax levy increase is 3.21 percent, which is within the tax levy cap.

Four board of education candidates are running for two open seats, including incumbent D0nald J. King, Meesha Johnson, Leslie Duroseau, and Charles A. Styler.

Voters will also weigh in on propositions, including one to continue to amend the bus fleet replacement capital reserve fund; to appropriate and expend $380,000 for the purchase and replacement of three 72-passenger buses from funds in the Southampton bus fleet replacement capital reserve fund; to expend 1,800,000 from the 2007 Ten Year Capital Reserve Fund for building improvements, including the renovations to provide climate control to the third floor classrooms and offices in the elementary school at an estimated cost of $975,000; and climate control to second floor classrooms and offices in the intermediate school for $825,000; to contract with the Southampton Youth Association in the amount of $404,314 for a recreation program for youth; and to contract with the Southampton Historical Museum for $235,000.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Southampton Intermediate School music room, located at 70 Leland Lane in Southampton.
