Almost 10K Still Without Power Due To 'Bomb Cyclone' In HV

Here's the latest update of power outages around the Hudson Valley.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — UPDATE: Progress has been made restoring some of the outages around the Hudson Valley. The "bomb cyclone" that tore through the region caused more than 16,000 electricity customers to be without power around 8 a.m. As of around 11:30 a.m. there are just under 10,000 still waiting for the lights to come back on.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — More than 16,000 power outages were reported active as of 8 a.m. Thursday, seven hours after the National Weather Service put the lower Hudson Valley under a high wind warning as the 'bomb cyclone' pummeled the region. The highest peak wind gust recorded overnight was 55 mph at the Westchester County Airport.

NYSEG's 9,754 outages are mostly out of the Hudson Valley. In the HV:

  • Westchester: 683
  • Ulster: 189
  • Putnam: 733
  • Orange: 4
  • Dutchess: 310

Central Hudson's 9,234 outages are mostly in four Hudson Valley counties:

  • Dutchess: 5,185
  • Orange: 598
  • Putnam: 1,487
  • Ulster: 1,602

Con Edison reports 5,274 outages, including:

  • Westchester: 4,557

Orange & Rockland has 1,553 outages, including:

  • Orange: 883
  • Rockland: 474

The National Weather Service said damaging winds are expected to slowly dissipate through Thursday. As it heads northeast, the storm will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Drenching rain was dropped across the region by the storm.

Temperatures will drop temporarily after the storm passes through. Here's the forecast:

  • Today-A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.
  • Tonight-Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. West wind 11 to 17 mph.
  • Friday-Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
  • Friday Night-Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph.
  • Saturday-Sunny, with a high near 58. West wind around 5 mph.
  • Saturday Night-Clear, with a low around 42.
  • Sunday-Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.
  • Sunday Night-Partly cloudy, with a low around 49.
