Eleanor's Legacy Announces Endorsements in 2011 Campaigns

Friday, October 14, 2011 (New York City) – Eleanor’s Legacy announced its 2011 endorsements of women running for public office in New York. Founded in 2001 by former New York State Democratic Committee Chair Judith Hope, Eleanor’s Legacy was designed to build a new generation of pro-choice Democratic women candidates, informed voters and activists in New York State

Among the candidates chosen, Eleanor’s Legacy awarded Lynne Eckardt and Cathie Sloat an endorsement in their race for the Southeast Town Board.  Sloat stated, "The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee’s endorsement is very important support to my campaign and demonstrates confidence in my ability to win this seat. I am extremely grateful to Eleanor’s Legacy."

Lynne Eckardt said she was thrilled to have the Legacy’s endorsement again. “It’s an honor to be supported by such a prestigious and successful organization.”

Since its founding, Eleanor’s Legacy has elected over 500 women to state and local office across New York State and equipped over 1,100 women with the skills they need to run and win. Eleanor’s Legacy endorses progressive women candidates with a demonstrated commitment to upholding a woman’s right to choose and to promoting the values of the Democratic Party.  To be eligible, a candidate must be pro-choice, female, and an enrolled Democrat running for state or local office in the state of New York.

In 2011, the Board received over 100 applications from candidates in 27 New York counties. Eleanor’s Legacy founder Judith Hope said: "We are thrilled to be supporting such outstanding women during this critical election. Now, when we need a sensible government more than ever, it is crucial that women’s voices are represented.”
