Carmel Again Named 1 Of Safest Small Cities In America

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — How does your town or city rate in terms of safety? Eight Hudson Valley communities were among "The 100 Safest Cities in American for 2021," according to Safewise.

Included in the list is Carmel, which was ranked No. 14.

Carmel has a population of 34,251 and a median household income of $105,406, Safewise reported. Its violent crime rate per 1,000 is 0.23; the property crime rate per 1,000 is 2.22.

As part of its analysis, SafeWise reviewed crime report data from the FBI, tallying that with each town or city's population, while excluding locations with populations under 2,500 and a threshold of 17,375. Only places below the threshold and ones that provided the FBI with a full crime report, were additionally included.

The Hudson Valley communities that made the top 100 are, listed in order by national ranking:

10. Bedford
14. Carmel
16. Eastchester
21. Harrison
26. Hyde Park
59. Yorktown
89. Scarsdale

It's not a new phenomenon for Carmel, which was named one of the safest small communities in January by MoneyGeek and has made Safewise's list before as well.

Crime rates were calculated by violent and property crimes reported per 1,000 residents.

According to SafeWise's data, violent crimes within the places in the top 100 are 12.33 times less than the average of all other cities nationwide, with property crimes continuing to drop across the country.

SafeWise noted that communities with smaller populations tend to have lower rates of crime.

Locations with higher household incomes, SafeWise also wrote, are usually safer overall. The average income for the top 100 safest cities on SafeWise's list was $106,298, with the national average $68,703.
