Hudson Valley Reports Job Growth

New York state labor department numbers show a little growth in the past 12 months.

Two areas of the Hudson Valley made it onto the New York State Department of Labor's list of metropolitan areas with the fastest job growth in the past 12 months.

In all, 11 metro areas in the state added private sector jobs since November 2018. The most rapid growth was in these six:

  • Ithaca (+2.9 percent)
  • New York City (+1.8 percent)
  • Kingston (+1.6 percent)
  • Syracuse (+1.6 percent)
  • Rochester (+1.5 percent)
  • Dutchess-Putnam (+1.4 percent)

The number of private-sector jobs in Orange-Rockland-Westchester metro area grew as well in the same period, but only by 0.6 percent.

"In November 2019, the New York State economy added 15,300 private sector jobs. In addition, the statewide unemployment rate held steady at 4.0 percent in November," said Bohdan M. Wynnyk, Director of the New York State Department of Labor’s Division of Research and Statistics.

Total compensation costs for private industry workers increased 3.8 percent in the New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA metropolitan area for the year ended in September 2019, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said in November. That includes wages, salaries and employer costs for employee benefits.
