
PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — Several ceremonies are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Putnam County to commemorate veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States.
The John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil runs 6 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. It begins with an opening ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday. Flag retirement will take place throughout the vigil, which is hosted by the Putnam County Joint Veterans Council.
On Sunday, VFW Post 1374 and Auxiliary of Carmel and American Legion Post 270 will host two events: a 9:30 a.m. ceremony at the monument on Terry Hill Road in Kent and an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Post Home, 32 Gleneida Ave., Carmel. Refreshments will follow the second ceremony.

Also on Sunday, the New York Riders will dedicate a Battlefield Cross Statue Memorial at the Putnam County Veteran Memorial Park. This will be the newest addition to the park.
The ceremony will start at 6 p.m.
On Memorial Day, several local events are planned.

In Putnam Valley, VFW Post 391 will have ceremonies, which though not open to the public this year will be televised.
In Brewster, VFW Post 672, American Legion Post 71 & Marine Corps League Detachment 242 will hold the annual parade from Brewster Fire House to Veterans Park (formerly known as Electrozone Field. Step off is at 10:15 a.m. A ceremony at the park will follow the parade.
In Cold Spring, VFW Post 2362 and American Legion Post 275 will hold a ceremony at Main Street Memorial at 10 a.m. and lay a wreath on the Hudson River.
In Mahopac, VFW Post & Auxiliary 5491 and American Legion Post 1080 are sponsors. A parade from Clarke Place to Veterans Memorial Park on East Lake Boulevard steps off at 10 a.m. A ceremony will follow at the monument. Then American Legion Post 1080's ceremony is at noon at 333 Buckshollow Road. Refreshments to follow at VFW Post home
In Putnam Lake, VFW Post 9257 & Auxiliary & AMVET Post 1111 will host a parade and ceremony at The Monument located at the intersection of Fairfield and Haviland Drive. Parade step-off from the Castle Building is at 10 a.m. Refreshments to be served at VFW 9257, located at 4 Fairfield Drive, Patterson.
