HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Since the coronavirus reached the state a year ago, 50,000 New Yorkers are confirmed or suspected to have died of COVID-19.

The state's grim milestone was documented Monday morning by Johns Hopkins University's coronavirus tracker, which compiles data on cases from across the city, state, nation and world.

The tally of confirmed and probable deaths from the virus in the state stood at 50,017 as of roughly 9:30 a.m., according to the tracker.

While March was the month in which the outbreak rapidly escalated, a year ago April was the deadliest month for the coronavirus in New York. According to the university, 21,767 people died of COVID-19 in New York in April, 2020.

The record for most deaths in one day was 1,273 on April 7, 2020.

With April 2021 just days away, more than 9 million total doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in New York, state officials announced Monday.

"We can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but until we get there it is more important than ever for each and every New Yorker to wear a mask, socially distance and follow all safety guidelines," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
