Obituary: Former Brewster Woman Dies

Kathleen M. Wood, of Leander, TX, and formerly of Brewster, died at home with her family by her side Friday. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Wood was born Dec. 17, 1924 in Richmond Hill to the late William Proudfoot and Kate (Murray) Moffat. She graduated from Richmond Hill High School and Adelphi College with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She also took classes during the summers at Western Connecticut State University to augment her education so she could teach elementary school.

Mrs. Wood married Kenneth E. Wood on Oct. 9, 1948 in Richmond Hill Methodist Church. Mr. Wood predeceased his wife on March 17, 2008.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brewster before moving to Texas.

Mrs. Wood was a registered nurse, then substituted as a school nurse and an elementary school teacher, before becoming a third-grade teacher in the North Salem School District, where she taught for more than 30 years. After retirement she spent several years as a volunteer "pink lady" at Putnam Hospital Center.

Mrs. Wood is survived by three children, Lawrence (Larry) of Brewster, Paul and his wife Ivacy of Leander, TX and Jeanne McMurray and her husband Arthur of Carmel; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Wood was predeceased by her siblings and her daughter-in-law Jill Wood.

A graveside service will be held Friday at Milltown Rural Cemetery in Brewster. Interment will follow the service. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beecher Funeral Home (located on Putnam Avenue in Brewster, 845-279-3615).
