Putnam Joins STOP-DWI Crackdown Over Super Bowl Weekend

Research shows that high-visibility enforcement can reduce impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts around the Super Bowl start Friday and run until Monday, and several Putnam law enforcement agencies are participating.

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr., Town of Carmel Police Department Chief Anthony Hoffmann and Kent Police Department Chief Kevin Owens announced Wednesday that their departments will participate in a special enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving.

Police said the weekend of America's most-watched sporting event is historically a deadly period for impaired driving.

New York State police, county sheriffs and municipal law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state and will be out in force to reduce the number of alcohol-related injuries and deaths.

The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends, Halloween and the holiday season in December.
