Two Unions Recruiting Apprentices in Putnam Area

A limited number of apprenticeships are available.

Two unions are recruiting for a limited number of apprentices in the mid-Hudson Valley, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Electricians, Local Union #363, will be recruiting for 15 electrician apprentices from August 1, 2016 through May 5, 2017.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union #363, which is Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster counties, as well as parts of Delaware and Greene counties. They must also have a high school diploma or high school equivalency that includes a year of algebra with a passing grade. They must also:

  • Must pass a physical.
  • Be physically able to perform the work of an electrician, which may include climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers, crawling and working in confined spaces; lifting heavy tools and materials; and working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
  • Have a valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Have reliable transportation.

Applications can be obtained and submitted, in person only, at Local Union #363, 67 Commerce Drive South, Harriman, NY, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from August 1 through August 5, 2016, and during the first full business week in November of 2016 (November 7 - 11), February of 2017 (February 6 – 10), and May of 2017 (May 1 - 5).

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Insulation and Asbestos Workers, Local Union #91, will be recruiting for six insulation and asbestos worker apprentices from July 25, 2016 through August 05, 2016, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

Applications can be obtained from Local Union #91, 1024 McKinley Street, Peekskill, NY, Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. There will be 50 applications available. Applications will be given out on a first- come, first-served basis. All applications must be returned to Local Union #91 no later than 4:00 p.m. on August 10, 2016.

To be considered, applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a drug test and a medical exam.
  • Must pass an agility test.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.
    • Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 50 lb for extended periods.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Working at heights that may exceed 20 feet.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
    • Carrying a 12- foot ladder for a distance of 20 feet and setting it up.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites, which are located in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties.
