Woman Arrested In Fatal Lake Mahopac Hit-and-Run: UPDATE

The Mahopac resident, who faces manslaughter and DWI charges in Putnam County, was arrested for DWI in May on the New York State Thruway.

MAHOPAC, NY — A Mahopac resident accused killing someone in a hit-and-run on Friday had been arrested on DWI charges in May and received a plea deal.

The 37-year-old woman is accused of killing James Crecco Friday evening by hitting him with her car while driving drunk.

Maggie Deperna was arrested Saturday and charged with two felonies: vehicular manslaughter 2nd degree and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, plus two misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated.

Crecco, 61, was hit as he was walking to his car near his home on South Lake Boulevard at about 8 p.m. Police said he and his car were hit by a westbound gray Jeep Cherokee that didn't stop.

Deperna was arrested on two drunken driving charges just last month on the New York State Thruway. SEE: Mahopac Woman Arrested Saturday For DWI. On June 15, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while ability impaired and two traffic violations, according to New Baltimore Town Court officials.

After her arrest Saturday, she was sent to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on bail of $100,000 cash or bond, said Capt. Lisa Ortolano of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

The criminal investigation was moved to the Sheriff's office from the Carmel Police Department on Sunday.
