Art Proposals Wanted for 5 South Brooklyn Subway Stations

The MTA will recreate the prize-winning designs in durable materials at 5 different N Train stations — including one in Sunset Park.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — Imagine a piece of your original artwork, super-sized and recreated in durable materials inside an N Train station, admired by thousands of commuters each day.

The dream is in reach: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)'s Arts & Design division called on local artists Wednesday to submit their best and most subway-worthy designs for consideration.

The winning designs will be recreated in five N Train stations throughout South Brooklyn.

  • 8th Avenue station (Sunset Park)
  • 18th Avenue station (Bensonhurst)
  • 20th Avenue station (Bensonhurst)
  • Bay Parkway station (Bensonhurst)
  • 86th Street station (Bay Ridge)

To apply, artists must submit up to 20 images to the Art & Design website; complete a short application form; and attach a resume and brief artist statement.

A selection panel of art and design professionals will select a group of finalists, who will then be required to develop a more intricate blueprint for their design, including site-specific details. These finalists will receive $1,000 each.

The budget for design and installation at each station will range from around $200,000 to $230,000, and will include an artist's salary of up to 20 percent of the project's total cost.

In return, each winning artist must submit a budget, produce a set of completed designs for their N Train station, select a person or crew to build their piece and oversee the installation of the artwork. They must be available to work in New York City between 2016 and 2020.
