Sunset Park Nursing Center To Close Next Year, Officials Say
Augustana Center currently houses about 50 seniors and will be shuttered by NYU Langone in the summer of next year.

SUNSET PARK, NY — A nursing home and rehabilitation center on Second Avenue will be shuttered next year, officials said. The move will leave about 50 seniors looking for a new home.
NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn plans to shutter the Augustana Lutheran Center, at 5434 Second Ave., next summer with the company planing to use the building to expand their acute care and ambulatory services in the future, a spokesman for NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn said.
"We have determined that our focus needs to be on enhancing acute care and ambulatory services, and the future use of the Lutheran Augustana site will be a part of this strategy," the spokesman said in a statement. "This change will help us invest more strategically in our facilities to become world class, and the best place for care in Brooklyn."

The closing was first reported by the Brooklyn Eagle.
The center currently houses 50 residents with 30 living there permanently, Community Board 7 district manager Jeremey Laufer said at a recent meeting. NYU Langone said they were working with family members and a team of social workers to find a new home for the soon-to-be displaced seniors.

Augustana Lutheran Center provides rehabilitation services, hospice care, pain management, therapy and more to temporary and permanent residents. It was first opened by Lutheran Medical Center in 1908 but was taken over by NYU when they merged with the company in 2015and became NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn.
