Lamb Loose On Gowanus Expressway Rescued By Cops

Drivers snapped photos of the lamb that made its way onto the expressway Wednesday morning.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — A lost lamb that made its way onto the Gowanus Expressway on Wednesday morning has been brought to safety.

Drivers began snapping photos of the lamb — which was later named Petunia — during the morning commute just after 9 a.m., with some reporting it trotting around near 38th Street and others saying it made its way up to 50th Street.

Two officers with the NYPD Highway unit eventually rescued the lamb and brought it to safety, according to tweets from the transportation chief.

"Highway had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb...," Chief Thomas M. Chan tweeted later that afternoon. "Officer Gatto & Lieutenant Nassef worked hard to ensure the safety of everyone on the expressway today, including a wayward lamb."

The lamb, which the New York Post reported is believed to have come from a nearby slaughterhouse, was taken to the Staten Island Animal Care Center and later transferred to the Skyland Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, according to tweets from the center.

This isn't the first time barnyard animals have wreaked havoc in the area.

A pair of goats were seen wandering along the N line tracks between the Fort Hamilton Parkway and New Utrecht Avenue stations just this past August.

The goats in that incident proved tough to capture. The MTA, NYPD and animal control were all called to the scene to herd the animals to safety, an MTA spokesman tweeted.

After the goats were tranquilized and removed from the tracks they were sent to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen. The goats — nicknamed Billy and Willy — even got to meet former Daily Show Host John Stewart, who helped herd them into a truck to take them upstate.
