Build Your Own Playground Pop-Up Coming To Sunset Park

Kids can build their own playgrounds at this Earth Day pop-up in Industry City.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — Earth Day celebrations aren't over just yet. An event in celebration of the holiday this weekend will let kids build their own playgrounds in an Industry City courtyard.

play:groundnyc, a local nonprofit, will run the Earth Day pop-up on Sunday. It will include cardboard, recycled materials and loose parts from Industry City tenants for visitors to use in creating their own playground.

"Kids will be able to build their own playground while having fun by creating and dreaming big while parents can join in or relax in the courtyard," organizers said.

The "adventure playground" pop-up will run from 1 to 4 p.m.

An adventure playground is "a junkyard for youth," according to play:groundNYC's website. This type of playground, the organization says, gives children ownership over the space and gives them control over how to build, destroy and enhance it since it is typically made using materials removed from the waste stream.

The playground is staffed by trained playworkers.

play:groundNYC is a non-profit organization that advocates for young people's rights by creating environments that encourage freedom through self directed play.

The organization runs a 50,000 square foot adventure playground on Governors Island and also works with communities to establish their own neighborhood playgrounds or play initiatives.
