City Wants To Open Shared Manufacturing Space In Sunset Park

The city is looking for an operator to open the center with 3D printers, CNC machines and more inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

SUNSET PARK, NY — The city wants to open a shared "advanced manufacturing" center — with spots for woodworking, welding and more — inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal later this year.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) released requests on Friday to find an operator to open and manage the shared center inside a more than 20,000-square-foot spot in the terminal, according to the agency.

The spot currently has equipment like 3d printers, a CNC machine, water jets, welding equipment, woodworking tools and more inside the terminals Futurework Center, the EDC said. Under the new plan, the agency would open up the gear for residents who want to start their own industrial business, the EDC said.

Members would have access to 15,000-square-feet of shared workspace, along with 5,000-square-feet of storage in the terminal.

A spokesman for the EDC said that the new shared space will help smaller businesses get off the ground, and they can eventually move into the recently opened Micromanufacturing Hub then up to 10,000-square-feet of space elsewhere in the terminal.

The deadline for proposals is on April 20 and the EDC hopes to open the new shared workspace in the last quarter of the year, according to the RFP.
