Locals Want 'Death Trap' At Sunset Park Gas Station Fixed: Report

Parents have called on the city to add barriers to the sidewalk at the Speedway gas station on Fourth Avenue, the Brooklyn Daily reported.

SUNSET PARK, NY — Locals want the city to fix a "death trap" at a gas station on Fourth Avenue where they're forced to dodge motorists illegally driving on the sidewalk to get to the pumps, the Brooklyn Daily reported.

Parents and children on their to P.S. 172 have to avoid speeding drivers getting in and out of the Speedway gas station, between 30th and 31st streets, because there's no barriers or markings to designate where the sidewalk is, according to the paper.

"Cars reversing and driving on the sidewalk, cars not paying attention — it’s pervasive," mother Arsenia Reilly told the Brooklyn Daily. "Unless someone’s cognizant of what’s happening and able to dodge cars, there could be a serious accident where a kid could get hurt or killed."

Parents told the paper that they repeatedly called on the city to fix the issues, but so far not much has been done.

Councilman Carlos Menchaca and other local leaders told the Brooklyn Daily they were working on a solution to the problems and the NYPD recently installed some sidewalk barriers last week.
