LOOK: Outdoor Gym Area Slated for Sunset Park (Updated)

The city's plan for a new fitness center in the park includes disability-friendly workout equipment.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — The city's Parks Department has unveiled its latest designs for a new adult fitness center in Sunset Park.

The project, funded using $500,000 from the office of Sunset Park Councilman Carlos Menchaca, is scheduled to be complete some time in late 2018 or early 2019.

Draft renderings shown to the community board's parks committee on Monday show a disability-accessible fitness area featuring a variety of exercise machines, including several workable by those with disabilities, including a chest press, a hand cycle and parallel bars.

The proposed fitness area would be installed adjacent to the park's basketball courts and swimming pool. According to the city, that location is the only space in the park that can accommodate the fitness machines without disrupting existing trees.

In addition to the equipment, several new benches would be installed near the park's spray fountain area, as well as a new drinking fountain by the basketball courts.

The parks committee approved the design Monday, according to chair Victor Swinton.

The full membership of Community Board 7 will vote on the proposal at the body's upcoming June 15 meeting.
