SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — A woman who jumped in front of a train as it pulled into the 59th Street station was killed Monday morning, police said.

The woman, in her 30s or 40s, was hit around 8:15 a.m. after she jumped in front of a southbound R train, police said. Officers previously believed the woman had gone onto the tracks to find a dropped phone, but later said it was a possible suicide.

The train operator activated the emergency brakes when he saw the woman, but couldn't avoid the collision, a representative with the transit workers union said. The operator went out to investigate and told the Rail Control Center the location and condition of the woman, who was under the train.

Police initially said the woman was an MTA agent, but later that afternoon said it was unknown if she was employed by the MTA or not. A spokesman with the MTA said the agency had no record that the woman was an MTA employee.

The train operator and the conductor were taken to the hospital for trauma, the union representative said.

The incident caused extensive delays along the D, N and R lines during Monday's commute, the MTA said.

R service halted between 36th Street and Bay Ridge-95th Street in both directions around 8:45 a.m. and northbound N trains were running along the D line from Coney Island-Stillwell Av to 36th St. in Brooklyn, the MTA said.

N and R trains were making regular stops again by 9:10 a.m., but delays continued along the D, N and R lines.

The MTA suggested taking the B37 or B63 for bus service between Bay Ridge-95th St and 36 St.
