Sunset Park Recreation Center To Get $4M Facelift, Officials Say

Construction is expected to begin by the end of summer 2018.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — A $4-million upgrade to the Sunset Park Recreation Center has been approved by the city, according to officials.

The community center off Seventh Avenue in Sunset Park was intended to be a swimming pool when it was first built in the 1930s, but quickly became a year-round hub for neighborhood activities after a basketball court and multipurpose space was added, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The building was granted a landmark status in 2007, but the Parks Department said it has been neglected for 40 years.

The $4 million will go towards updating the center's heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical systems, the proposal for the renovations show. Additional signage and lighting fixtures will also be included and metal bars outside the main entrance will be replaced with a glass facade.
