Sunset Park Uplands Connectors Project To Host Final Public Comment Session
The project aims to bring bike lanes and improved pedestrian access to 43rd Street and 58th Street.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — Sunset Park community activist group UPROSE and the Department of Transportation (DOT) will host their third and final public comment session this Feb. 2 on the Sunset Park Uplands Connectors Project. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Community Board 7 office, located at 4201 4th Ave. (the entrance is on 43rd Street).
Ryan Chavez, who leads infrastructure programming at UPROSE, said the DOT and the group have partnered on the project for several years. According to the DOT, the project's goals are to "establish safe and inviting pedestrian and bicycling routes connecting the upland community to waterfront destinations" through the implementation of "pedestrian safety improvements, bike facilities, landscaping, wayfinding and street furniture."
Following two previous feed back sessions, the DOT has decided to focus its efforts on 43rd Street and 58th Street between the waterfront and 5th Avenue, Chavez said.

At the Feb. 2 meeting, community members will be able to review and comment on the list of recommended street changes the DOT has come up with.
Chavez said a final work list should be finished by the summer, after which the DOT will enter into its normal procurement and construction process, which the agency says takes about two years, on average.
