Syracuse Police Department Responds To Executive Order No. 1 Action #3: Body-Worn Camera Policy

On June 19, 2020, Mayor Ben Walsh issued the Syracuse Police Reform Executive Order Action #3. This action called for the Syracuse Police Department to revise its current body-worn camera policy to ensure that officers record the entirety of their presence on the scene of a police encounter. Today the Syracuse Police have released an updated body-worn camera policy in draft form.

The updated body-worn camera policy has been revised based on input from a variety of internal and external sources. Revisions will clarify guidance for officers and the public on when officers are required to activate and authorized to deactivate cameras, as well as guidelines for permitted and prohibited uses. The policy states that body-worn cameras should be capturing and recording during “all law enforcement activity.”

The policy is in draft form pending an upcoming public engagement process required promised by Mayor Walsh and required by Governor Cuomo’s Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Executive Order.
