From the Rockefellers to the Gates, the well-to-do bought and sold homes in the Hudson Valley.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Did you buy or sell a home in the Hudson Valley during 2018? If the answer is yes, congratulations. If the home sold for more than $6 million, then super-congratulations.

Property Shark, a blog that covers real estate market trends, research reports, company and industry news, took a look at most expensive residential sales in, what they consider, upstate New York: Westchester, Rockland and Dutchess counties.

The blog compiled a list of the 10 most expensive residential sales during 2018, eight of which were in Westchester and two in Dutchess. They ranged in price from more than $6 million to more than $30 million.

Leading the pack, not surprisingly, was the $33 million sale of the Rockefeller Estate, which is in Mount Pleasant and was owned by the late David Rockefeller. The initial listing price was $22 million but it went on to sell for an additional $11 million.

The Georgian-style main residence boasts a rolling staircase, a large living room and many more luxurious amenities.

Billionaire Bill Gates, of Microsoft fame, purchased through a trust the second most expensive property, which was located in North Salem. Its 124 acres went for $15.8 million.

Skipping to No. 5, a property in Tivoli, Dutchess County, previously owned by media mogul Jann Wenner, changed hands for just under $11 million.

Other sales included Rye, Larchmont, Scarsdale, South Salem and Rhinebeck.

Here is a list of the top 10:

To compile the list, Property Shark looked at all residential transactions that closed in 2018, taking into account condo, single- and two-family homes. Package deals were excluded.

"Upstate New York" was defined as all areas of the state, excluding the Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, New York, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Had they excluded Westchester and Rockland counties, Dutchess County would have dominated the list, Propery Shark said.
