Creative Writing online summer camp is available starting July 1!

Please join us for HUDSON VALLEY RISING WRITERS Creative Writing Camp

For four Wednesdays in July, we will host online via zoom youth writing workshops for students entering grades 5-8. It will meet on July 1, 8, 15, 22 via Zoom from 1-4pm EST.

Campers will be encouraged to get outside (with masks of course!) while putting pencil to paper. Multi-genre writing workshops in a live virtual format will look at the advantages and disadvantages of life during the pandemic, empowering writers to consider different perspectives, such as the positive impact on the climate, a new appreciation for nature, and how they might draw attention to the environment through their writing. Workshops will also provide an opportunity for young writers to express their feelings of being away from friends and confined inside their homes during this challenging time.

Starting at 1pm each day of the session, writers will meet with writer Amy Holman in a live 40 minute workshop session, then break to put pen to paper, then return at 3:15pm for a check back and review/recap of their work for the day, concluding at 4pm. Writers are encouraged to get OUTSIDE while they write! In this multi-genre creative writing course for 5th-8th graders,
students will engage in generative writing exercises and activities; read and discuss contemporary work by young writers; and practice providing feedback to their peers in a safe, positive environment.

During fun, exploratory, and engaging weekly sessions, students will work toward producing a final portfolio of their own original poetry and prose. A culminating reading will be open to friends and family during the last hour of the final class session.

We are excited to welcome writer Amy Holman to lead the workshops! Amy Holman is a Pushcart Prize-nominated poet and essayist, and is the author of five poetry books, including Wrens Fly Through This Opened Window (Somondoco Press), and Wait For Me, I’m Gone, that won her the 2004 Dream Horse Press Chapbook Prize. She’s had writing published in two Subway anthologies, one for essays and one for poems, as well as anthologies on beach houses, mountains, TV shows, and wild & domestic animals. She has been a visiting poet for literacy days at schools in New Jersey and Connecticut, and on a Masters School 10th grade field trip to the Ossining Weir. She is a literary consultant to writers of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, an artist working in watercolors, and a poetry teacher. She has had poems in Blueline: Spirit of the Adirondacks, The Westchester Review, BigCityLit, Gargoyle, Barrow Street, and Archaeology Magazine online.

The cost of the program is $80 for 10591 residents, $90 non-residents.
