Sleepy Hollow Football Club fields boys and girls teams, separated according to birth year, playing in the Westchester Youth Soccer League.
Several of our players also play for the Sleepy Hollow school teams. This past Saturday night, players from different SHFC squads attended the SHHS boys varsity soccer’s final home game of the season. It was heartwarming to see such support for this great group of high school players in a very exciting game. Special mention goes to Julian from United, Ian from Fusion, and Nicolas & Alex from Dutchmen who served as ball boys. In just a few short years, these boys may themselves be taking the field in SHHS uniforms while continuing to pursue their love of the game.
Here is each of our SHFC team's results for this past week:

2009 Girls Red Fury won 8-2 on Sunday at Hackley against the Wolfgang Lady Wolves. In the first half, goals were scored by Rachel Richardson (2), Meghan McMahon, and Maeve Yox. Red Fury again came out strong in the second half, with the first goal scored by Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka, followed by Breanne Rodriguez, Samantha Taylor, and Sofia Cruz. Goalies Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka and Rose Ritz both blocked several shots on goal in the first and second halves, respectively. The team worked well together throughout the game, playing strong defense, moving the ball and passing between players, and ultimately earning an impressive victory over their opponent. Red Fury next play October 27th against the Shrub Oak Cyclones at Hackley.
2009 Boys United, coached by John Patino, prevailed 2-1 on the road against the FC Somers Napoli. They are 6-0 atop their division. On October 27, they host the Greenburgh United Predators at 1:30pm at Hackley School.
2009 Boys Red Lions played the Lansdowne Flames in Yonkers, who before the game were undefeated with 3 points clear on the top of the table. The Red Lions displayed their full potential and were completely dominant, adapting well to the turf and wide field, winning the game by 4-2. This was the team's strongest game of the season so far, creating many chances and well-thought multiple-passing plays. The Red Lions now share first place in U-11 Division I with the Lansdowne Flames, having demonstrated they can fight for the top spot in the division and the league.
The 2008 Girls Red Comets game started just as the rain came down heavily on the New Rochelle Rangers field. The downpour, nor being down two players, didn’t slow down the Comets from dominating the muddy grounds. Our midfielders played a great game by holding the ball steadily in their court with several nice passes up the field to our strikers for some key breakaways. But this time center midfielder Amani Carty took the play into her own hands and dribbled her way past a few defenders to score the Comets first goal of the game. The second goal came from striker Cassie Junge who received another nice assistant from fellow striker Giovanna Fanelli. Another midfielder, Yvonne Leonardo, made an aggressive effort to score and she succeeded by achieving her first goal of the season! The last two goals were scored by Cassie Junge for the hat trick! An amazing team effort made by all players as some took on not their usual positions including Yvonne Leonardo, Paloma Dominquez and Antonia Fanelli who shared their time as goalie and did a great job. The game ended in a shutout with a Comets win 5-0 over the New Rochelle Rangers. Tune in next week as they take on the Pelham Devils at Hackley at 4:30 pm.
2008 Boys Fusion For the fourth time in the six games of this fall season, Fusion found themselves without a ref. While the league is the one whose function is to supply ref, apparently a league shortage has again impacted Fusion in a most detrimental way. The dynamic of a game changes without a uniformed and properly trained ref, and calls or the lack thereof become much more important. Questions of bias aside, the volunteer refs have done their best to help the boys play and not forfeit, however for yet another week, it felt as though the result might have been different with an official on the field.
Despite the referee chaos and in a complete downpour, second-place Fusion took on third-place Wolfgang TWolves, whom they had defeated handily in week 1 of the season. A wet ball and fast paced play created many falls and slippery situations for both teams. Knowing that advancement in the division required a win in this game, one could feel the tension.
It had been Fusion’s custom to fall behind by 2 goals in the game’s first minutes. This scenario almost happened again, but Pierce Davis and Marcus Spataro stopped early first-half would-be goals. Fusion would get on the board in minute 17 when Sebastian Londono from the side passed to Luke Tonaj, who was able to muscle it in. Unfortunately, just a few minutes later, a Wolfgang equalizer went into the far upper corner of the goal to tie at 1.
Aggessive offensive pushes from Kieran Degen, Sean Mackiewicz, Ian Papadopoulos, Londono and Edwin Dutan were close but did not get past Wolfgang’s keeper. While the field got sloppy, defensive play particularly by Bruno Flores, Raul Socualaya and Olin Keough, was key in keeping Fusion’s goal clear.
With a 3-0-3 record, Fusion are in second place of their division. They travel on Sunday to the New Rochelle Rockets.
2008 Boys River Sharks fell 2-1 on the road against the Shrub Oak Fusion. The River Sharks, at 3-2-1, are currently in third place in division 2 of their age group. They are coached by Ed Greenberg, Michael Glynn, and Gerardo Soto. On October 27, they host their division-leading Rye Brook Rush.
2007 Girls Blaze hosted the Rye Running Rock Stars and came away with a 1-1 tie. On October 27, the Blaze, who are coached by John Sutherland and Jim Wurster, travel to the John Jay Purple.
2007 Boys Dynamo lost 2-1 at home against the New Rochelle Vikings. On Saturday, October 26, they travel to the FC Somers Galaxy for a make-up game. On Sunday, October 27, they travel to the Port Chester Dragons.
2007 Boys Dutchmen prevailed 4-1 on the road against the Briarcliff Beasts. With a 2-1-3 record in division 2 of their age group, the Dutchmen are coached by Howard Allen. On October 27, they host the Pelham Galaxy at 11am at Washington Irving School field.
2006 Girls Storm travelled to the division-leading Quickstrike Patriots and fell 2-0. On October 27, they will travel to the Bedford Strikers. With a 2-3-1 record in Division 1 of their age group, the Storm are coached by Kevin Richardson, Tom Andruss, and Deepak Kapoor.
2006 Boys Firebolts, coached by Matt Weidner, prevailed 3-0 at home against the Yorktown Impact. With a 2-3-1 record in division 2 of their age group, the Firebolts will travel to the New Rochelle Revolution on October 27.
2006 Boys Warriors prevailed 3-1 on the road against the Briarcliff Boltz. They are 3-3 in their division and will travel to the Don Bosco Hawks Thunder on Sunday October 27.
2005 Girls Cyclones played and exciting game against the Mt. Pleasant Wildcats. The cold steady rain did not deter their motivation to win. The Cyclones possessed the ball from the opening whistle and used the width of the field to create opportunities to score. Seven minutes in the first goal came off a ball that played by Lily Lopez to Thalia Tsilibes who had the Wildcats defense and goalie scrambling. As the goalie came out of goal to make a save, Thalia took a shot that was high over the goalie’s head for the first goal of the game. The next scoring opportunity came off a corner kick taken by Thalia that found Isabelle Murphy with a clear shot to the goal. This shot was taken well behind the 18, shot with authority and bent away to the upper 90! The Cyclones would walk off at the field at the half up 2-0.
The Wildcats came out during the second half and scored two quick goals via well placed through balls. Diana Cordero has an innate ability to trail, pick-up rebounds, and score from the weak side. This is exactly what she did as a ball bounced off a defender to put the Cyclones up again. The Wildcats continued to press and almost scored as the Cyclone’s defense stopped three shots in a row with Lauren Koch out of the goal. Lauren was able to respond and get her hands on the ball despite all the confusion in the 6. The final goal was scored by Thalia again. Several shots were put on the Wildcats goal that were not fully cleared; Thalia was able to beat the goalie to the ball and put it low in the left corner to seal the victory for the Cyclones! This was a total team victory for the Cyclones as every member of the team made a contribution to the win.
2005 Boys Red Legends prevailed 5-2 on the road against the New Rochelle Purple Dragons on Sunday. Saturday’s game against the Rivertowns United Spartans, which was re-scheduled from earlier in the season, was unable to take place due to a scheduling mistake and will again be rescheduled. On Sunday, October 27, they travel to the Port Chester Eagles. They are coached by Francisco Mendieta, Cedric Smith and Mark Taylor, and are 4-0 in their Premier League of their division.
JV Boys Los Gauchos lost 3-1 at home against the Don Bosco Hawks Lightning. They are 3-3 in the Premier Division of their age group. On October 27, they travel to the East Ramapo Braves.
