THE HOME RUN PROJECT at the Hudson Valley Writers Center

Writing workshop series for children in grades 3-6

(Krista Madsen)

As part of its ongoing efforts to bring the excitement of language to children, the Hudson Valley Writers Center has partnered with the Home Run Project to offer a unique six-week program designed to interest school children in reading, writing and storytelling.

The Home Run Project was developed over 20 years ago as an entertaining and interactive learning program to help children (grades 3-6) improve listening skills and focus, encourage the love of reading and creative writing, and at the same time strengthen crucial life skills. The program is based on the true stories in The Macmillan Book of Baseball Stories and The Good Guys of Baseball co-authored by Stan Friedmann, Mike Levine, and Terry Egan. Featured themes include: Overcoming Obstacles, Family Ties, Making Tough Decisions, Power of Friendship, Teamwork, the Fun Factor, Love of Learning, Inclusion and Tolerance, Standing Up for Your Beliefs, and more. Participants will have opportunities to become storytellers through group discussions and writing exercises and will learn about the importance of editing. The students will be asked to create original story ideas and write short stories that reflect life lessons from stories in the baseball books. $150 for six one-hour sessions.

Class meets for 6 Sundays starting Nov 3, 3-4 pm (no class Dec 1)
at the HUDSON VALLEY WRITERS CENTER @ Philipse Manor Station, Sleepy Hollow
