Recognition for the Class of 2020 has begun!

The first of several events includes lawn signs on display at AHHS

The lawn in front of Alexander Hamilton High School transformed into a "yearbook" to celebrate the Class of 2020. Instead of flipping through pages, community members can enjoy an outdoor display of senior photos.

On May 27, the first in a series of planned events took place to celebrate the upcoming graduating class. All 78 seniors have a lawn sign with their photo and a brief message: "Congrats graduate! AHHS Class of 2020."

Many traditional end-of-year events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a committee was formed to develop ideas to recognize the senior class and all of their hard work in reaching this high school milestone.

“Graduation wasn’t canceled in 2020," Superintendent Marc Baiocco said. "The experience was crafted in response to the current reality of the pandemic and will provide our graduates with an amazing memorable experience they can share together with their family."

“The lawn signs will recognize our graduates, while reminding everyone that the class of 2020 endured a great deal of stress," said AHHS Principal Joseph Engelhardt. "Our community celebrates their resilience."

Joining Dr. Baiocco and Mr. Engelhardt in putting up the display were AHHS Assistant Principal Jessica Maracallo and parent volunteer Lucie Rambaran.

“It has been very difficult watching my son enjoying his senior year with his friends to having the year come to a complete halt,” Ms. Rambaran said. “They will miss all the events that seniors look forward to from the beginning of the school year. As the ending of the school year nears, the reality of it all is starting to affect him. He misses his friends and sports.”

The lawn signs are just one of the recognitions the senor graduation committee has planned in the upcoming weeks.

Graduates and their families are invited to stop by the school and see the display and are reminded to wear masks and be conscious of social distancing.

As word got out, Ms. Rambaran said families were stopping by to see the display.

“The smiles are priceless,” Ms. Rambaran said.
