It was a lovely spring weekend for soccer and Sleepy Hollow Football Club’s teams took to their respective fields, their eyes on a strong finish to the spring season. Some teams will close out their spring season this coming weekend, while the majority of SHFC teams will finish up on June 16.
Here are each SHFC team’s results for this past week:

The game started off with strong offensive plays by Ada Chalfy resulting in 2 shots on goal. Other offensive stars in the fist half included Katie Yalmokas and Mackenzie Linhart who both kept up excellent speed and pressure on the opposing team. Melodie Molina played also very strong on the offensive line with great passing and teamwork. Marley DeFilippis and Natalia Hargraves both had a strong start on defense showing tenacity and focus. The second half began with the first goal of the game. Marianna Patsch brought the ball down the field with a textbook cross to center and a goal by Linhart. Patsch kept the energy going after that goal and made another attempt at goal shortly after. Hargraves, DeFilippis, and Noa Levine kept feeding the ball to the offensive players and out of the defensive end. The game concluded with a penalty kick on goal by the Lynx to tie the game at 1-1. A disappointing end to a game well played by the Bandits! The team is looking forward to bringing their energy to the field this weekend as they face the New Rochelle Purple Rebels in an away game at 3:30 pm.
2010 Boys Shadow The Shadows were feeling the heat and cancelled practices/games due to rainy weather as the boys faced off against Yorktown Heights on Sunday.

The home game started off with some great passing by Joaquin Rodriguez, who would lead the team in passes on the day. Luca Bruno showed tremendous hustle to score his first goal of the game at the 1 minute mark (pictured). Nico Barbosa and Bobby Gonzalez showed off some really nice passing and they both had multiple shots on goal. The boys were moving a bit slower than usual, but continued to fight hard and try out new plays.
Leo Zohar spent the game in goal and had some beautiful saves. The Shadows went into halftime up 1-0. Shortly into the second half, a corner kick by Shrub Oak was volleyed off several players and made its way into the Shadows goal. After multiple attempts on goal, Jackson Pena answered by finding the back of the net a few minutes later.
Elion Ashiru had a great hustle and assist from Gonzalez which resulted in a goal for Ashiru.
Several great saves and shots on goal for the Shadows boys and Bruno had an amazing hustle from the half field mark to score on the Shrub Oak B2010 Green team to end the game 4-1 with another Shadows victory.
The Shadows will have their final game this Sunday at home at 11:45am against New Rochelle.
2009 Girls Red Fury lost 5 - 0 to the Briarcliff Banshees in Briarcliff Manor. At the start of the game, the Red Fury pressed against the Banshees with several shots on goal by Megan McMahon and Rachel Richardson. Brianne Rodriguez provided excellent midfield support and there were several great defensive plays by Charlotte Spiridakis, Grace McGovern, and Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka. Erin Arnegger in goal had several spectacular saves. However, the Banshees were up 2 - 0 by halftime. The second half showed great pressing by Maeve Yox, Erin, and Rachel with all three having multiple shots on goal. Swara Ketkar and Sophia Cruz provided strong midfield support. Although Maiyumi was goalie and had a spectacular save, the Banshees were able to score three times in the second half.
2009 Boys United travelled to the FC Spring Valley Tigers. The score is not available. The boys will close out the season on Sunday on their home turf of Pocantico Hills School field at 11:45am against the Scarsdale Milan.
2009 Boys Red Lions travelled to the Chappaqua Chargers. The score is unavailable. On Sunday June 9, the Red Lions will return home to Pocantico Hills School field to host the Manhattan Boca at 4:15pm.
2008 Girls Red Comets, coached by Joe Block and Sven Armster, played the West Side Red Bulls twice this past weekend. Saturday’s game at home was a make-up game from earlier in the season. Sunday’s game was on the road. The games ended at 1-5 and 0-5, respectively. The Red Comets will travel to the LMFC White Pumas this Sunday.
2008 Boys Fusion played a close game on Sunday against Castleford Wild. In the second minute, there was a near own goal by Wild. A few minutes later, a strong run from the Wild got a goal past the keeper Pierce Davis. In the middle of the first half, Kieran Degen, applying pressure, got the ball and rebounded it to Ian Papadopoulos, who finished it with a nice volley. Wild came back at the end of the half and sprinted past the defense for another goal, putting Fusion down 2-1 at the half.
In the second half, Fusion was scrambling for a goal. In the final minutes of the game, Jezrael Panama had a breakaway, shot, and then scored of the defensive rebound. With a final score of 2-2, Fusion are now 0-4-2 on the spring season. Next week, Fusion are looking forward to playing their counterparts, the SHFC River Sharks.
2008 Boys River Sharks, coached by Ed Greenberg, Gerardo Soto and Michael Glynn, hosted the LMFC Gold Knights for a make-up game at Peabody Field on Saturday. In imperfect field conditions and given the aggressive play of the game, there were several notable injuries to both teams. The River Sharks were happy to come away with a 3-2 victory.
On Sunday, the River Sharks hosted Ossining’s Munay and in a close one, were able to hold on to a 1-0 victory. Now 6-0 on the spring season, the River Sharks hope to remain perfect in their remaining two games, both at home. On Sunday, they will host their age-group counterparts the SHFC Fusion at Hackley Field at 3:15pm.
2007 Girls Blaze
Fans of the Sleepy Hollow Football Club were able to watch the club's U-12 Girls team clinch first place in Division 1 this past Sunday at Hackley Field in Tarrytown against the Munay Eathquakes from Ossining.
Seven minutes into the game, Kayla McGuigan intercepted a goalie kick in front of the Earthquake net and the ball ricocheted to teammate Julissa Casiano. Julissa dribbled past a defender and was quite near the goal when a quick kick off her right foot gave the Blaze a 1 - 0 lead. Strong goalie play by the Earthquake goalie kept the Blaze from any further goals in the first half. Midfielder Penny McVey had a nice attack down the sideline and burst past an Earthquake defender, but her shot on the net was denied by the Earthquake goalie. Likewise, strong kicks by Blaze forwards Gemma Fante and Sami "Beast Mode" Marvin and a very long hard kick by Blaze defenseman Gabby Disney from near midfield were all denied by the Earthquake goalie. On the Blaze side of the field, ball, strong defensive play by versatile players Zoey Murphy and Ellie Fox challenging Earthquake dribblers kept shots on goal to a minimum.
After halftime, the Earthquakes tried valiantly to tie the game, but team defense, including extra efforts from Lizzie Molina, Gabby Disney, and Zoey Murphy continued to thwart the Earthquakes' plans. Fifteen minutes before the final whistle, Carina Armster intercepted a pass near the Earthquake net and a quick dribble and shot from Carina put the Blaze ahead 2 - 0. The score would have been 3 - 0 minutes later when Blaze forward Meghan O'Hanlon was fed a pass by Lizzie Molina, and Meghan drove past two Earthquakes defenders and put a strong shot on goal, but another diving stop by the opposing goalie kept the Blaze from extending their lead. Much of the remaining game was played on the Blaze side of the field, but Blaze coach John Sutherland and team Manager Annette O'Hanlon expertly substituted players to keep everyone fresh. With 7 minutes to play, Blaze goalie Emily Aridas was able to deflect a shot on goal from a streaking Earthquakes player on a breakaway, and Blaze defender Penny McVey was able to recover the ball before another shot could be made.
When the game ended several minutes later, the Blaze, with their fourth clean sheet of the season had clinched the second consecutive WYSL Division 1 Girls U-12 Championship. There to cheer her teammates on was Blaze midfielder Juliana Marvin, who was not medically cleared to play, but still suited up and joined her teammates on the bench. Team leaders O'Hanlon and Sutherland are obviously teaching their young charges not just offense, defense, goal tending and passing, but good team play and sportsmanship.
Way to go, Blaze!

2002 Varsity Girls Mustangs upset the top ranked older Shrub Oak United 2-1. Shrub Oak was undefeated and had not allowed a goal since March. The winless Mustangs were undermanned missing 10 players and were only able to field 11 players thanks to new addition Anna Marisa Lara. The last time these teams played the Mustangs lost 0-3 to this squad that was on average 2 years their senior. The Mustangs stuck to their game plan by limiting unforced turnovers, keeping possession with simple passing, patiently containing the older/stronger United offense until they made a mistake, and conserving energy by choosing when not to press. Despite sharp play, the Mustangs went down 0-1 from a perfectly timed through-ball to the Shrub Oak star forward speedster who dribble-faked out 4th string keeper Maya Weitzen for the score. The Mustangs continued to play well and nearly tied the game on an Arianna Vizcaino cross that just missed Anna Marisa’s lunging head. Down 0-1 at halftime the Mustangs vowed not to fade in the second half as they had done in previous games. The girls started strong with solid play by the defense and some nice saves by the keeper. The midfielders Haley Wilenzick and Britany Alban consistently won their battles and eventually Britany sent a dangerous through-ball to streaking Arianna who just missed scoring by bouncing off the post. This rebound gave Isabella Chambers a chance to also just miss by going over the cross bar. With 15 minutes left Arianna got another chance on another through-ball, this time from Carolina Lopez, and faked-out the keeper evening the score. With momentum on their side the Mustangs earned a foul kick that Arianna sent past the United defense appearing to surely be scooped up by their keeper. Haley had other plans, racing in and colliding with the keeper causing a mild deflection of the ball that Haley then put away for the go-ahead goal. The Mustang defense had to continue to hold up against the fast strong United and did well until one more through-ball slipped by freeing the same speedy forward who scored in the first half. Keeper Maya was in a race to beat the forward to the ball and won the battle but earned a foul when they also collided outside the goal box. The game ended with a Shrub Oak direct kick from 19 yards out. A well positioned defensive wall made up of Mustang players forced the ball to sail over the cross-bar sealing the win. Sophie Sylves-Berry earned defensive player of the game honors by winning her battles and starting promising attacks. Haley Wilenzick earned midfielder of the game honors with great ball control, decisions, and hustle. Arianna Vizcaino was offensive and overall player of the game with one goal (nearly two) and one assist (nearly three). The Mustangs next play Larchmont away and hope this is part one of a three game winning streak to finish the season.
