Sleepy Hollow Football Club 2020 Fall Season - Week 4

Sleepy Hollow Football Club wrapped up week four of the Fall season. As we near the midpoint of the Fall season, SHFC teams continue to advance, growing stronger as teams, and showing up to support one another. Here are the most recent results for our SHFC teams:

The Boys U10 All Reds notched another W this week against Mt Pleasant FC. The game was a tale of two halves. The first half featured a lot of bunched up and sloppy play. The All Reds did get two goals in the first half, but it was far from "the beautiful game." The highlight of the first half was stellar goalkeeping by Ryan McMahon, including a PK save! The All Reds regrouped in the 2nd half after a rousing pep talk by coach Ben Neilsen at the half. Ben reminded them that spreading out and making passes to their teammates is the way the team should strive to play and the way to get goals. Sure enough, four quick goals started off the 2nd period and the All Reds never looked back. Even playing down a man for much of the 2nd half, the All Reds maintained possession of the ball and put continued pressure on the Mt Pleasant goalie. Goal scorers included Oliver Scherich, Ryke VanLent, Matthew Zhuzhingo, Manny Clavijo, and Ryan McMahon. The All Reds are now 2-1-1 and have a bye week before working their way back through the division. The All Reds are coached by Nathan Scherich, Ben Neilsen, and Gary Fairley.

The Junior Legends met Rye this past weekend. Miguel Silva Pérez scored his fourth goal in the last two games; however, it was not enough to propel the Junior Legends to victory. A hard-fought contest was put out of reach by a questionable penalty call and the Legends eventually dropped the points away at RYE. The team will look to get back into the win column this Sunday away against Mount Pleasant.

The Red Fury bounced back from last week’s loss with a decisive win against the Chappaqua Dynamites. A brace by Meghan McMahon and Sofia Cruz ensured a 4 - 1 win with Rachel Richardson providing 3 assists. Constant pressure by Breanne Rodriguez and Natalie Coffman forced the Dynamites to play defensively. There was excellent defending by Kate Masters, along with Swara Ketkar, and Mia and Meadow Gurreri. Kate Masters was also instrumental in setting up a play that resulted in one of the Red Fury’s goals. Goalies Rose Ritz and Maiyumi Marcus-Kanesaka had several big and exciting saves. The Red Fury looked in control throughout the game and displayed excellent teamwork. The Red Fury is coached by Katie McMahon and Kevin Richardson.

FUSION (Boys 2008) hosted the Don Bosco Hawks Panthers. Fusion immediately set a fast pace and controlled possession from the outset, though frustrated themselves as numerous attempts did not convert to goals. Kieran Degen, Sean Mackiewicz, Ian Papadopoulos, Eoghan Glynn, Luca Simbana, Luke Tonaj, and Raul Socualaya would all make attempts in the first half. The first two points of the game were finally scored by Glynn, both within the space of five minutes, to give Fusion a 2-0 lead into halftime.

After halftime, Fusion found their stride early. Sebastian Londono walked one in immediately into the half. Tonaj booted one in minutes later. Edwin Dutan scored an airborne goal to increase Fusion's lead and confidence. Fusion controlled play, with an attempt from Shyam Manganath and another Tonaj goal. A Don Bosco goal sent from a tricky angle finally got past Pierce Davis, who played a full game in goal and made numerous saves. Papadopoulos fed to Josh Ortiz for the final goal of the game just before the final whistle.

Defense effectively kept the ball away from Don Bosco enabled Fusion's offense to have the run of the field. Critical to this effort were Bruno Flores, Alessandro Soto, Simbana and Ortiz. Olin Keogh had another good game, mostly playing in midfield and outrunning his opponent.

Fusion came away with a 7-1 win and has a 3-0-1 record, currently in second place in the division as we reach the fall season's halfway mark. They will play Sunday at 9am at WI school field, hosting the Pelham Pirates. Coaches Ken Mackiewicz, Michael Glynn, Michael Degen and George Papadopoulos have been pleased so far this season with the team's cohesiveness, speed and solid effort. Go Fusion!

The Sleepy Hollow Blaze, the U-14 girls team of the Sleepy Hollow Football Club in the Premier Division of WYSL, played the Munay Earthquakes on Sunday at Washington Irving and defeated their rivals from Ossining 3 - 1 Sunday afternoon.

It was the ninth minute of the match when Gabby Disney took a free kick from the 25 yard line and hit a hard shot off the left post of the Earthquake goal. The rebound off the post came to Blaze striker Megan O'Hanlon. This is not unusual as Megan works hard on the pitch to put herself in the right place at the right time. Megan's quick shot off her left foot put the Blaze ahead 1 - 0. Blaze Assistant Coach and Team Mom Annette O'Hanlon had an extra wide grin as her team came back to midfield. Continuing the pressure, Blaze midfielder Zoey Murphy, launched a high corner kick two minutes later towards the Earthquake goalie box. When the ball bounced to midfielder Lilly Wurster just at the top of the box, Lilly made a strong low kick to the corner of the net that eluded the diving goalie and put the Blaze ahead 2 - 0. Three minutes later forward Jhoselyn Pugo came very close to adding another goal to the lead, but a diving stop by the opposing goalie kept the score 2 - 0 at the half.

Three minutes into the second half, forward Carina Armster intercepted an Earthquake pass near midfield and dribbled around, past, and through two defenders. Her quick shot off her right foot found the back of the net. This time it was Blaze Coach John Sutherland's turn to be smiling extra proudly as his team now had a 3 - 0 lead. The Earthquakes fought hard to come back, but the Blaze defense of Daisy Star, Juliana Marvin, and Gemma Fante used their quick feet and bursts of speed to help keep the Earthquake shots from cutting into the team's hard-earned lead. Midfielder Lizzie Molina and sister/forward Kimmy played well as a twosome, frequently winning loose balls and then passing ahead to keep the pressure on the Earthquakes goalie. Forward Samantha Mendietta came off the bench in the second half and used her blazing speed to steal Earthquake passes on three consecutive possessions, driving opposing players quite mad with her disruptive style of play. One of the Samantha's passes was to forward Sami Marvin who used her superior speed and dribbling ability to dribble around an Earthquake defender and launch a terrific centering pass just in front of the Earthquake net, The ensuing shot went over the cross bar however, keeping the score 3 - 0. The Earthquakes tried hard the rest of the way to salvage a tie, and even scored a goal with 4 minutes left to play. However, that was the only one of 21 shots on goal that eluded Blaze goalie Emily Aridas in the match.

Emily and the rest of the team have a bye week next week, but are scheduled to be back on the pitch at Washington Irving against the Chappaqua Cheetah's on November 1, the day after Halloween. The Blaze, hope to welcome back to the field their injured friend and teammate Penny McVey who was unable to make the match on Sunday. Fans are encouraged to come and watch their undefeated Premier girl's team try to scare up a win on the day after Halloween.

The Boys JV Red Legends completely dominated the John Jay Purple 9-1 at Baldwin Meadow Park. The scoring explosion was led by Frank Mendieta Jr and Aiden Smith with two goals each. Five more players scored including Christopher Panjon, Piero Cabanillas, Dylan Orellana, David Urgiles, and Jai Weitzen. David made the play of the game. He usually plays keeper but with the game in hand was rewarded with some play at forward. David showcased his skills by tapping a ball over a defender's head, then catching it with his other foot before it hit the ground. He then immediately flipped the ball in the air setting himself up for a show-stopping, side-winding, windmill-kick that nearly broke the net. Shouts of “golaso papa” were heard as even the referee couldn’t keep himself from smiling. It’s unclear if the translation is that David is the “daddy” of all goal scorers or if this was the “daddy” of all goals but one thing was clear.... it was a sight to see. The Red Legends remain undefeated with 18 goals scored and only 3 allowed. They next look to continue defense of their premier division championship against 3rd place Harrison.

The Varsity Girls Mustangs recovered from a 0-1 half time deficit for a 3-1 victory against the visiting Landsdowne Yonkers Orioles. Britany Alban connected with Arianna Vizcaino for the tying score early in the second half. Later Abigail Oppenheim made the play of the game by taking a ball with authority toward the right end line. Abi then found an angle around a Yonkers defender and sent an arching cross over the near-post positioned keeper setting up far-post positioned Britany for the crowd pleasing header into the net. With a slim new found lead the Mustangs kept up pressure and Isabella chambers worked around two defenders and set up a combo to Juliana Largess who connected with Arianna for the insurance score. Arianna managed not only two goals but sent several artillery like strafing shots over the crossbar putting the Yonkers keeper on notice.....all while playing on two taped ankles. The defense was solid all day with only the third score of the season allowed off a questionable and vocally contested penalty kick. The Mustangs find themselves undefeated in the Premier varsity division with only three games to go. They have scored 21 goals in 4 games and only allowed 3.

It was a 5-1 victory for the SHFC Los Gauchos Varsity team. There were 22 players in attendance and Alex, Oliver, Gabe and Mathew scored. You can watch the goals in action here:
