Spring 2019 - Week 2 of the season

Sleepy Hollow Football Club is in its second week of the 10-week spring season. 300 players play on our 22 teams, along with more than 40 volunteer coaches and team managers. With games across several local counties and frequent practices each week, playing for SHFC takes commitment from players as well as their families. SHFC is grateful for the support that friends, family and coaches give to these talented and dedicated players!

Here are each SHFC team’s results for Week 1 of the spring 2019 season:

2010 Girls Bandits won 3-1 over the LMFC White Lynx in an exciting game on Sunday. The game started off quickly with great offensive efforts by the team. Melodie Molina won possession of the ball and passed it to Mackenzie Linhart who made a shot, which was initially blocked by the goalie, but she stuck with it and forced a goal over the Lynx. Sabrina Graham, as goaltender, did a great job of stopping at least three shots on goal keeping the score at 1-0. Ada Chalfy attempted a goal from a far distance, and Marley DeFilippis and Noa Levine did a great job of stopping movement towards Graham in goal. Katie Yalmokas aggressively took the ball down the entire field. Another shot by Yalmokas almost resulted in a goal. Half time ended in a 1-0 lead by the Bandits.

Second half began with Natalia Hargraves in goal. The Bandits kept the ball near the Lynxs' goal in the first few minutes and Graham scored with a powerful precision kick. That goal was answered by the Lynxs' to bring the game to 2-1. Hargraves did a fantastic job defending the Bandit's goal in the second half and anticipating the shooters actions and getting the ball out and away from the center of the field to her teammates. Marianna Patsch demonstrated skillful footwork and took the ball from an opponent and, with many touches, she kept the ball close and brought it down almost the entire length of the field. She shot at goal and Linhart sealed the deal to bring the Bandits to a 3-1 lead. Lily Glynn almost answered with another goal for the Bandits with a powerful shot. The Lynxs' goalkeeper blocked her goal with an amazing save.

The Bandits are looking forward to this weekend's game against the White Plains G2010 Black in their home field at Pocantico Hills School on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Go Bandits! It is shaping up to be a great season!

2010 Boys Shadows continued to dominate at their game against Shrub Oak in Yorktown Heights on Sunday. It was a glorious day and a hard fought win by the Shadows. Our opponents had some strong kicks but in the end were no match for the strong teamwork of the Shadows. 3 goals by Elion Ashiru, 3 goals by Jackson Pena, a goal by Nico Barbosa and a goal by Andrew Lucchetti brought the final game score to 8-2. Main goalkeeper of the game, Joaquin Rodriguez was strong to divert shots on goal. This Sunday the Shadows will face off against Chappaqua on their field.

2009 Girls Red Fury hosted the Edgemont Wildcats. The score is not available. The Fury travel to the Wolfgang Lady Wolves on Sunday, April 14.

2009 Boys United battled FC Somers and came out on top 2-1. Kyle DeLucia and Jayden Morocho scored while strong defense and goaltending took care of the rest. United has won 5 of the last 6 games and the team has been clicking on all cylinders of late. United has its first road game Sunday April 14 in Yonkers at 1:30pm.

2009 Boys Red Lions hosted the Riverdale Green Vipers. The score is not available. On Sunday, April 14, they will host the Mt Pleasant Wildcats at 11:45am at Pocantico School field.

2008 Girls Red Comets, coached by Joe Block and Sven Armster, fell 3-1 to the Rye Legends. They will host the Chappaqua Cyclones on April 14 at 4:45pm at Hackley School field.

2008 Boys Fusion suffered a 3-2 loss against the LMFC Gold Knights. Fusion was in this same predicament in week 2 of their Spring 2018 season as well. In both fall 2017 and fall 2018, Fusion won their division and moved up to more competitive play, only to lose their first two spring games. Are Fusion creatures of habit? Did they do too much winter hibernating? Do they need good luck charm spectators to return to the sidelines? Coincidence or not, Fusion hope to break their losing streak this upcoming weekend.

On a lovely day for soccer, Fusion swiftly fell behind 2-0. Jezrael Panama, who was knocked down in the penalty box, scored on a penalty kick just before halftime. In the second half, Fusion tied the score when Edwin Dutan scored, thanks to a Kieran Degen assist, but Fusion’s defense wasn’t able to hold and LMFC scored in the final moments. Capable goalkeeping from Justin Paute and Dylan Largo held off some shots, but the Knights were able to muscle in a total of 3 strong goals. Fusion had some late-minute chances, but was unable to capitalize.

Coaches George Papadopoulos, Ken Mackiewicz and Michael Degen saw their team play hard and make notable improvements from their previous game. On April 14, Fusion will host the Manhattan United at 12:45 at Hackley School field.

2008 Boys River Sharks, coached by Ed Greenberg, Gerardo Soto and Michael Glynn, faced Scarsdale Dortmund. After a tight battle in the first half, the River Sharks began to find their rhythm and were able to rally for a 7-2 win. They travel to the Shrub Oak Fusion on April 14.

2007 Girls Blaze
By watching a travel team soccer match closely, one can see the types of players that a coach likes on his team. Anyone watching John Sutherland's Blaze team this week in their game at Hackley against the LMFC Gold Flash, would note that Coach Sutherland (and Team Manager Annette O'Hanlon) like to start with a strong, attacking front line.

In week two, observers saw mid fielder Ellie Fox intercept a Flash pass (try saying that three times quickly) and pass to forward Kayla McGuigan, who found the back of the net with a strong kick just three minutes into the game. Later in the first half, midfielder Penny McVey successfully challenged and stole the ball from a Flash forward and forward passed the ball to Kayla McGuigan who netted her second goal of the game just before half time.

The Blaze did not add any additional goals in the second half despite frequent shots on the opposing goal by forwards Julissa Cassiano, Gemma Fante, Sami Marvin, and Lizzie Molina who all peppered the opposing goalie throughout the half. One ball that found the net when Julissa Casiano passed to Kayla McGuigan who then passed to Gemma Fante who snuck the ball past a diving goalie was waved off as being offside.

Observers of the Blaze would also note that Coach Sutherland likes defensive players who challenge opposing forwards and keep them from getting a shot off. In this game, Juliana Marvin, Zoey Murphy, Meghan O'Hanlon and Gabby Disney limited the opposition to two shots on goal in the first half and one fewer in the second half.

With the Flash anxious to get shots on goal late in the game, twice defensive star Zoey Murphy used her blazing speed to chase down an opposing forward from behind and force the ball out of bounds before a shot could be taken. Goalie Emily Aridas was able to keep the team shutout intact when the one time the Flash executed a breakaway, as the last line of defense, she was able to make a diving save of the shot and then gather the ball before any rebound shot could be taken.

Next week the Blaze will again be home at Hackley with a Sunday afternoon game at 2:15 against rival Somers.

2007 Boys Dynamo hosted the Edgemont Warriors and prevailed 4-2. They will travel to the Greenburgh United Hornets on Sunday, April 14.

2007 Boys Dutchmen played to a 6-0 victory on the road against the Eastchester Titans. They travel to Randalls Island to play the Manhattan Cosmos on April 14.

2006 Girls Storm coached by Kevin Richardson and Tom Andruss opened their season on the road against the Rye Brook Fury, playing to a decisive 6-0 win. The Storm travel to Randalls Island on April 14 to take on the Manhattan Rockets.

2006 Boys Firebolts, coached by Ricardo Gonzalez, fell 7-3 on the road to a strong Manhattan Whitecaps team. The Firebolts will host the Rye Rogue Wave at Washington Irving school field at 4:30pm on Sunday, April 14.

2006 Boys Warriors were edged out 3-2 by the Lansdowne Yonkers Cougars. They host the Alba Sharks at 11am on Sunday April 14 at Washington Irving school field.

2005 Girls Cyclones played an incredible game this Sunday, completing 93 passes to dominate the game against Rye Brook Crush. The team did an amazing job passing the ball until the right moment to move forward. A cross from Thalia T. made it to Caitlyn O. who tapped it in, putting the Cyclones up 1-0 by the end of the 1st half. Our defense played strong and continually shut down Rye’s offense. The Cyclones kept the momentum going and scored again halfway through the second half. Thalia T. pushed the ball through to Isabelle M., who shot the ball from outside the 18 yard line and put it in the top left corner of the net, putting the Cyclones up by 2. Unfortunately, Rye Brook got lucky at the end of the game, final score was 2-2.

2005 Boys Legends had a hard fought 1-0 away win at Somers on the weekend. The entire team played well and as a team, with the winning goal turned in by Kenneth off a cross from Alex. Well done Legends!

2005 Boys Red Devils fell on the road to the White Plains Porto Red, by a score of 5-3. On Sunday April 14, they travel to the LMFC Orange Wolves. The Red Devils are coached by Francisco Mendieta, Mark Taylor, and Cedric Smith.

2004 Boys Argentina played their final match on April 7th, 2019, after 8 years and 16 total Spring & Fall seasons, as well as 6 Winter Futsal seasons. Honors include 4 AYSO Extra Season titles, 2 WYSL Season titles, 4 Futsal League titles, and numerous Tournament titles. Team Captains Shubhro Biswas and Gabriel Lewis lead the team to a gutsy 5-3 win only 10 players of which 4 played sick or injured, on a very hot turf and no substitutes. Goals were scored by Braulin, Alex and Gabriel.

Original players remaining from 2011 are Peter Mardjonovic and Gabriel Lewis. The team is also made up of Braulin Pena, Julian Bermeo, Dan Tantsyura, Alex and Owen Searle, Esteban Clavijo, Peter Mardjonovic, Jason Duque, Shubhro Biswas, Adam Panek, Gabriel Lewis and guest GK Cooper Taylor was outstanding.

Coaches Luis, Scott, Bill and Michael shepherded these boys through 8 years. Kudos to all-time goal scorer: Braulin Pena; all-time assists leader: Gabriel Lewis and most balls defended/won: Peter Mardjonovic.

This team will be merged with the older B03/04 Los Gauchos JV. See the Argentina Captains' coin toss: https://youtu.be/8xHI-G8sX1M

JV Girls Strikers travelled to the Castleford Blue Jays and played to a scoreless tie. They visit the Shrub Oak Empire on Sunday, April 14 in search of their first win of the spring.

JV Boys Los Gauchos won away at a very tough opponent on a hot and humid turf. Los Gauchos played short-handed again, borrowing players from B04/05 Argentina. Los Gauchos won 4-1 and allowed only 2 direct shots on goal. The team completed over 300 passes again. Goals by Braulin, brace by Zach, and and incredible header goal from Shubhro. Assists by Mateo, Gabriel and Braulin.

Henry, Dylan, Paul, Shubhro and Jason shared honors as they held a very good team in check, protecting GK Jhonatan's goal.

Los Gauchos are in the midst of 6-matches playing on the road, returning to play at home in June. Special mention to Braulin Pena and Gabriel Lewis who helped out Los Gauchos JV as well as Horsemen Varsity, playing a total of 3 matches this past Sunday.

2002 Varsity Girls Mustangs suffered their first defeat of the season 3-4 against Don Bosco United. Seven players were unable to attend the game and an uneven dirt field prevented finesse play and controlled touches. Without any subs the Mustangs fought back from a 0-3 deficit to get within one goal with 2 minutes left. Britany Alban led scorers with two goals, Sabrina Byrne added one, and Maya Weitzen had two assists. Olivia Hille made her debut at keeper making several difficult saves, aggressively charging Don Bosco forwards, controlling her area, and making smart distributions. The Mustangs next travel to face a higher rated Shrub Oak but a high school music trip to Virginia may make attendance a challenge once again.

2002 Varsity Boys Horsemen lost a close one to the Rye Brook Raiders by a score of 3-2. The Horsemen take to the road on Sunday, April 14 to play the Eastchester Strikers.
