QUICK STATS: Rental Market Shows Stony Brook Far From College Town
Tiny fraction of housing in town is for rent, Census data show.
Despite recent chatter about turning Stony Brook into a college town, recent data released by the U.S. Census department show that when it comes to the rental market, the area is anything but.
According to the U.S. Census Department American Community Survey Estimates, out of Stony Brook's 4,894 housing units, only 320 are rentals, representing a little more than 6 percent of the housing market. The latest ACS estimates are based on data from 2007-2011 and do not include numbers of undisclosed, "illegal" rentals in towns.
Nationally, rentals make up about 45 percent of the housing stock, according to the Census.

According to the ACS, the majority of the rentals in Stony Brook are occupied by locals identifying themselves as white, renting 236 units. Asian members in the community make up the second largest rental demographic, renting 56 units in town.
To compare it to another New York town with a State University of New York college, upstate New Paltz has 2,142 housing units in its village, and 1,414 are rentals.
