3 Upper East Side Taco Spots Ranked Among NYC's Best

A new list by Eater of the city's "outstanding" tacos names three Upper East Side eatieres as some of New York's best.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Few may think of the Upper East Side as a destination for tacos, but a trio of eateries in the neighborhood have been included on a new list of must-try tacos in New York City.

The list of "37 Outstanding Tacos to Try in NYC," published Friday, includes Burger 1 NY on Lexington Avenue, Casa Birria NYC on East 86th Street, and El Paso Taqueria on East 97th Street.

That first spot may sound the least likely. Burger 1, on Lexington between East 79th and 80th streets, was "taken over by a Mexican proprietor," who now sells burgers and grilled cheeses alongside chicken, steak, chorizo and carnitas tacos, Eater wrote.

Casa Birria is a new addition to Eater's list, which was originally published in 2016. The food truck, parked daily on East 86th Street and Third Avenue, capitalizes on the red-hot "birria craze" by selling tacos, quesadillas and tostadas all stuffed with the trademark stewed beef delicacy.

Furthest uptown is El Paso Taqueria, which is now 12 years old and "pleasantly worn," according to Eater. The midblock taqueria is technically over the 96th Street border into East Harlem, though many would still call it Carnegie Hill.

The menu includes rarer options like octopus tacos, plus huarache, sopes, burritos and nachos, Eater reported.
