Half An UES Block Is About To Be Pulled Down

Six buildings on York Avenue between East 85th and 86th streets will be bulldozed for a planned assisted living facility.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Long Island-based developers have filed plans to demolish six buildings on an Upper East Side block in order to clear out a development site for a planned assisted living facility, according to public records.

The Engel Burman Group applied for demolition permits at six adjacent low-rise buildings on 1622-1632 York Avene, located between East 85th and 86th streets, in late October, according to records from the city Department of Buildings. In August, the same developer filed plans to construct a 14-story assisted living facility at the location.

It's unclear when demolition on the buildings will begin and when the assisted living facility is expected to be constructed.

Ehe Engel Burman Group bought the six low-rise buildings that occupy the site of the future facility for $46.5 million in July. The buildings hit the market in 2016 and were previously owned by the estate of Jacques Chretien.

The planned new development will rise 170-feet-tall and function as a long-term care facility, according to plans filed with the Department of Buildings. The facility is expected to house about 130 residential units, according to building plans.

People living in the facility will have access to amenities such as common space on every floor, a fitness room, a beauty salon and a dining room on the building's 14th floor. The facility will also have a floor dedicated to inpatient treatment rooms, according to development plans.

The firm H2M Architects + Engineers was listed on development plans as the new facility's designer.
