Half An UES Block Could Be Replaced By Assisted Living Facility

Developers that recently bought up half an Upper East Side block revealed their plans for the site.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A development group that recently bought up half a block in the Yorkville section of the Upper East Side has filed plans to build a 14-story assisted living facility where the low-rise buildings currently stand.

The new development will rise 170-feet-tall on York Avenue between East 85th and 86th streets and function as a long-term care facility, according to plans filed with the Department of Buildings.The facility is expected to house about 130 residential units, according to building plans.

People living in the facility will have access to amenities such as common space on every floor, a fitness room, a beauty salon and a dining room on the building's 14th floor. The facility will also have a floor dedicated to inpatient treatment rooms, according to development plans.

Long Island-based developer the Engel Burman Group recently bought the six adjacent buildings that occupy the site of the future facility for $46.5 million. The six buildings hit the market in 2016 and were previously owned by the estate of Jacques Chretien.

The low-rise buildings that currently occupy the block are mostly mixed-use or residential. Permits to demolish the existing buildings have not been filed with the city.

The firm H2M Architects + Engineers was listed on development plans as the new facility's designer.
