These New Restaurants Are Coming To The Upper East Side

A bar in the old Two Little Red Hens Bakery spot, a French restaurant and a burger joint are among the new eateries coming to the East Side.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The arrival of summer and the advent of the vaccines mean that Upper East Siders will likely head in droves to local restaurants and bars — and there will be a few new spots to patronize.

At least eight new eateries are set to open in the neighborhood in the coming months, according to a review of liquor license applications presented to Community Board 8, as well as data on new restaurant applications provided to Patch by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

They include a new bar run by the scion of Schaller & Weber at the former home of Two Little Red Hens Bakery, a French cafe replacing a shuttered coffee shop, and a burger chain moving into the spot once occupied by a local burger purveyor.

The new restaurants

Herm (1020 Lexington Ave., between East 72nd and 73rd streets)

  • Herm will be a cocktail bar, moving into the former home of Lexington Bar and Books, a longtime cigar bar. Unlike the old occupant, however, Herm will not allow smoking, according to owner Tom Martignetti — the man behind a number of trendy Manhattan eateries — who presented the plans to Community Board 8 on May 4.

Home Kitchen (155 East 84th St., between Lexington and Third avenues)

  • Not much is publicly available about this new restaurant, whose arrival was revealed from city application data. A website says that the business is "coming soon," while a Google Maps listing says it will be open daily, mostly during dinner hours.

Irregulars (1152 First Ave., between East 63rd and 64th streets)

  • Irregulars will be a "nice English pub," proprietor Michael Egan told the community board this month, adding that he was entering the restaurant business because his career on Wall Street "seems to be going south." The storefront has been a restaurant-bar since the 1960s, Egan said, most recently occupied by Baker Street Pub.

Jeremy's (1652 Second Ave., between East 85th and 86th streets)

  • The owner of this upcoming bar is Jeremy Schaller, the third-generation owner of venerated butchers Schaller & Weber, whose store sits right next door. It will take over the store occupied by Two Little Red Hens Bakery, which revealed in March that it was seeking a new location. Schaller told the board he is on "very good terms" with the bakery management.
  • Designed in the "spirit of old Yorkville," Jeremy's will pay tribute to bygone Upper East Side establishments like Elaine's, and serve drinks named after the area's "historical components," Schaller said.

Maman (1424 Third Ave., between East 80th and 81st streets)

  • The French cafe with seven other locations across the city will open in June in the storefront formerly home to Irving Farm Coffee Roasters, its website says. The "all-day cafe" will specialize in breakfast food with locally-sourced ingredients, a representative told the board.

Marwin Thai (1132 First Ave., at East 62nd Street)

  • This new Thai spot has little internet footprint so far, aside from a website that describes it as "Delicious, Delightful & Distinct." The storefront was formerly home to the Moroccan and Middle Eastern restaurant Casablanca Grill.

Smashburger (804 Lexington Ave., between East 62nd and 63rd streets)

  • As Patch reported in March, the fast-casual chain will move into the storefront that used to house Burger Heaven, a locally-owned diner that closed down in February 2020.

Stacked (1654 Third Ave., between East 92nd and 93rd streets)

  • There's little information about this new establishment, which also comes from city data. The entity behind the application is Sfumato Holdings, LLC.
