John Steinbeck's Former Upper East Side Home Hits Market

The author lived in the East 72nd Street apartment until his death.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The Upper East Side home where author John Steinbeck lived and worked until his death has hit the market — complete with the writer's original desk — according to a real estate listing.

The Nobel prize-winning author's apartment, located on the 34th floor of the Tower East co-op building on East 72nd Street and Third Avenue, is asking just under $5 million, according to a listing from luxury real estate agency Stribling.

Steinbeck lived in the apartment with his third wife Elaine Anderson Steinbeck until his death in 1968, the New York Post first reported. Elaine continued to live in the home until she died in 2003, according to the report. While the home has since been renovated, Steinbeck's study was kept intact and features some of the author's notes and his original writing desk, according to real estate listings.
