New 18-Story Apartment Building Planned For Upper East Side

The new development will rise on Madison Avenue between East 79th and 80th streets.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Developers have filed to build a new 18-story apartment building on the Upper East Side.

The new development will rise 210-feet-tall on Madison Avenue between East 79th and 80th streets, according to plans filed with the City Department of Buildings. Despite the building's size it will only contain 16 apartments — which indicates luxury units will be built.

With 59,032 square feet of the new development zoned for residential use, the average unit will be about 3,689 square feet. Planned residential amenities include a billiards rooms, terraces on the second floor and rooftop, bicycle storage and a gym with a steam room and sauna, according to building plans.

The development will also feature three retail spaces on the building's cellar level and first floor and an office space on the building's mezzanine floor, according to building plans.

Plans were filed by Michael Witek of the Naftali Group. The architect for the new building will be Peter Pennoyer, according to development plans.

Demolition plans for the site have not been filed. The site is currently occupied by a five-story mixed use building.

A partial stop work order was issued for the Madison Avenue site this year regarding a job started in 2007 to convert the building from residential to commercial uses, according to Department of Buildings records. The order was issued due to "applicant withdrawal" from the project, according to the records.
