UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Popular Upper East Side coffee spot Café Jax will not return from its coronavirus hiatus, as its location has been put up for rent, according to signs recently place in the café's windows.

The East 84th Street café, which was crowded day and night, did not announce its closure on its social media channels, but its website appears to be deactivated. The business' phone number has also been disconnected.

A "for rent" sign also appeared in the space next door, which previously housed Medicine for the Soul Yoga.

Café Jax did not stay open for takeout orders when New York City enacted social distancing regulations in March that prevented restaurants and cafés from seating customers. Students and remote workers flocked to the café, which had a large lower level with lots of space to work. In 2019, Eater named the business one of the city's 20 best coffee shops for working.

New York City has recently started to relax social distancing regulations, allowing certain industries to reopen and hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to return to work. In-person dining won't return until New York City is cleared for "phase three" of the state's reopening guidelines. The city begins phase two on Monday, June 22.
